Thanks Gildas, that narrows things down. However, xine and ogle both work
OK, as does 0.2.9, although I was unable to sync the audio on one dvd
which is why I decided to try 0.3.1. I installed the following:
vlc-0.3.1-1mdk.i586 vlc-gtk-0.3.1mdk.i586
vlc-alsa-0.3.1-1mdk.i586
libdvdcss2-1.1.1-1.i586
libdvdcss2-devel-1.1.1-1.i586
a52dec-libs-0.7.3-1.i686
libdvdread-0.9.2-1.i686
libdvdread-devel-0.9.2-1.i686

alsa does not work as I need libasound something, but dsp does the job for
the moment. Alsa improved the sync noticeably on 0.2.9.

vlc loads up Ok but when I try to open a dvd I get lots of info (using vlc
-vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv), the relevant bit seeming to be the following: vpar: no
vout present, spawning one vout: no free XVideo port found for format
0x30323449 (I420) vout: no free XVideo port found for format 0x32595559
(YUY2) vout: no free XVideo port found for format 0x36315652 (RV16)
module: locking video output module `xmga'
vout error: unknown screen depth
vout error: plugin was unable to allocate at least one direct buffer
thread info: 10248 (video output) has been created ((unknown):0)
module: unlocking module `xmga'
vpar error: can't open vout, aborting

The dvd plays and I can hear the sound, but no picture. Any ideas? And
how do I work the xvideo extension? Be most grateful if you can put me
right as I like vlc and 0.3.1 sounds good for me.

John
