Can't start vlc from terminal in OS X

Yes. I suppose so. I'm a beginner to unix, but I logged in with stephan at
startup and when I launch the terminal I'm logged in as stephan. And it says
"[xtephan:~] stephan%".

I tried logging out GUI and login as root and tried to start vlc from the
terminal as root. But the same problem appears.
