VLC Late sound

I am also running Linux 2.4.18, VLC 0.4.0 but without any sound problems.

BUT...
I am using the dsp sound module &
I have the emu10k1-20020301-2.4.18-1.patch applied to kernel &
I have the preempt-kernel-rml-2.4.18-4.patch applied to kernel &
I compiled VLC on this system (to be certain everything matched).

Those patchs can be found below the location beginning at:
www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rml....
