   Looks like you're running vlc as root while the display doesn't
belong to root (and there's probably even no $DISPLAY variable set
for root). Suggestion: don't run vlc as root. If there are reasons
that force you to do so, check your $DISPLAY environment variable
and have a look at xhost or Magic Cookies on how to share your X
display.
