I just got a brand new 17" iMac.
I remember reading about how the Apple DVD drives appear to have a
hardware region lock.
Not out of the box.
It appears that the OSX DVD Player application is what causes it. At
least under 10.2, you can set CD/DVD behavior upon mount. Set it to
ignore, or to launch vlc. It appears that until you set a region out of
the box, the drive is not region locked.
I would recommend NEVER running Apple's DVD player, and always use vlc or
some other player. If the prompt appears prompting you to choose a
region, click cancel, eject the drive, and then re mount the dvd AFTER you
have chosen in System Preferences for the OS to take no action upon
mounting the disc. You should be set from there.
I don't think anything can be done for those who have chosen a region. :\
