So far as I'm aware it's more complex than Numbski describes it; it all
has to do with whether the specific drive you have is RPC-1 (region
free in principle) or RPC-2 (locked in the firmware). Full information
is available via http://www.firmware.fr.st/

I have a TiBook, and as yet I haven't assigned a region. But I can't
seem to get vlc to work.

Can anyone walk me through it? I've looked everywhere around the vlc
site, and though I'm not the sharpest geek in the box, I've had a mac
for a long time and I still can't work out a darn thing about how to
work with this software. I think I have everything installed that I
need -- but perhaps not.

I'm running OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).

My problem is that I start vlc and nothing happens; it seems there's no
way to get it to read a DVD.
