[vlc] has anyone successfully used vlc with OSX?

I'm looking for instructions on how to use this software.

I have a TiBook and am running OSX (10.2).
I downloaded the software, and am looking for a way to play DVDs from 
all regions without changing the region lock of my DVD drive.


I start up the programme and nothing happens; regardless of what I do.
I need step-by-step instructions; please!

Can someone please help?
