It seems like vlc is skipping a lot of pictures. This is usualy an
indication that something is too slow to keep up during the decoding. Since
you're using redhat my guess whould be that the problem is that dma is
disabled for your dvd drive, since redhat does that in it's  newer releases.
To find out why they do that, and how to turn it back on you need to look
around on redhat's site.
