I've run the tests on the DELL - see below:

1. vlc --noaudio thenameofyourvideofile
KO, does not work - same crash
2. vlc --novideo thenameofyourvideofile
works OK, ie good sound...
3. vlc --vout=sdl thenameofyourvideofile
works OK, though a bit choppy, missed some frames
4. vlc --aout=sdl thenameofyourvideofile
KO - crashes
5. vlc --nooverlay thenameofyourvideofile
OK, but poor video (lots of green/red artefacts)
6. vlc --fast-mutex thenameofyourvideofile
KO - same crash
7. vlc --fast-mutex --win9x-cv-method=1
 thenameofyourvideofile
KO - same crash
8. vlc --fast-mutex --win9x-cv-method=1
 thenameofyourvideofile
KO - same crash - same as 7?
9. vlc --intf=gtk thenameofyourvideofile
KO - same crash

Config:
DELL Latitude C600 with 256Mb RAM
win2K v5.00.2195 SP2
Graphics: ATI RAGE Mobility 128 AGP 2x (run in
1400x1050, 60Hz mode)

On the Thinkpad T20 under win ME vlc-045 works
perfectly, no pb. It has a S3 Savage IX graphics card

Not yet been able to run the tests on the NetVista and
winXP- should be able to do that over the week-end,
though.

Let me know what type of tests/traces you need to go
further ... Thanks... André
