You get this behaviour because the preferences are stored in a
separate file "vlcrc". For example, if you're running win NT/2K/XP,
it's located in:
Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\videolan.

So you can edit vlcrc and replace "rc" with "win32", or you can delete
the whole file to get the default preferences.

Another method is to launch from command line: "vlc -I win32". This will
force the win32 interface, and you'll be able to change your favourite
interface through the GUI.
