Ok, the --no-translation config option has been fixed, it should work properly now.
Alternatively, you can also override any language settings used by vlc by setting the LC_ALL environment variable to the correct language. For instance open a dos command box and type:
set LC_ALL=fr_FR
vlc
And you should see the french version of vlc.

So basically you want even stereo soundtracks to use the 4 speakers (replicating the front speakers to the rear) ?

The current channel mixer simply drops channels that aren't mappable to your speakers setup, which means that if you listen a 5.1 audio track onto a 2F2R, the front center channel will be dropped.
Would that explain the problem you describe ?

If you are using your headphones, then you should definitely enable the headphones filter in the preferences panel as it will emulate a 5.1 audio setup through the headphones. This should give you a better experience than just stereo.
