It seems like this is becoming more and more
a problem. Do you think you could develop an
easier maintenance approach using apt-rpm?

I'm messed with the vlc rpm's a number
of times, and I always end up going
back to the tarballs and configuring/compiling
myself. No blame to you - it just seems
there are too many packages always
changing for rpm style.
