It's a fantastic idea.
Quicktime (and I read it's already used for playback on MacOS X) can be used to
compress to DV and send it to the firewire device.
It's fast enough for realtime. However I'm not sure which mac would be fast
enough to do both decompression and compression to DV in real time, vlc seems to
take many ressources already on my iMac.
