No, it still crashes my machine the same way. 

FYI, VLC works fine on my other P4 1.7ghz GF4 4600 XPPro machine.

Could you try this version and report on any success or failure:
http://www.videolan.org/pub/testing/vlc-0.5.2-test2/win32/vlc-0.5.2-test2-wi
n32-full.zip

With this version you won't need to use the --plugin-path option anymore 
("C:\vlc\vlc.exe %url%" should work).
