I don't really know what's happening, but you could try a more recent version of vlc (http://www.videolan.org/pub/testing/vlc-0.5.2-test3/win32/vlc-0.5.2-test3-win32.exe)
Make also sure you tried both of the audio output plugins (waveout and directx).
