[vlc] vlc controller not working

greetings,
i am having trouble using the vlc controller.  movies play just fine, 
but i am unable to pause, FF, rewind, skip chapters or even quit the 
vlc program (only way out is to force quit).  i am using a 500mHz ibook 
running OS X.
