[vlc] streaming

I have tried unsuccessfully to stream an mpeg4 file from a Mac to a PC on
the same LAN (no firewalls between them) as well as an mpeg2 from the same
PC to the Mac (not at the same time). In both cases vlc has no problem
playing the local file, but I am not able to play the network stream. On the
Mac, all that I did was to Open File, select the MPEG4, and then select
"Stream Output" and enter the IP address of the PC.  I then open vlc on the
PC and select Open Network Stream.  I assume that I should now see the
stream from the Mac?

I tried the same thing from the PC, File/Streaming Output, Select File and
enter IP address of Mac.  Run vlc on Mac but nothing is  received.

I'm sure I am making some very elementary mistake.  Can someone suggest what
I might try to make this work?
