[vlc] Video Problem...

I have asked this question a few times and no one has giving me any help 
on what I need to do to get the Video working on VLC...
The audio works just fine, but when I try and run, a .ogg, vob, avi or 
mpg short movies I see only a blue screen, so can anyone help as to why 
I am unable to view a short movie...???

I am running Debian, kernel 1.4.19...

Thanks for any help anyone can offer me...
