[vlc] VLC reviewed in Dutch magazine MacFan

VLC 0.5.2 got a small review and was featured on the CD of the largest 
and most popular Apple Magazine in The Netherlands, MacFan in issue 46, 
out for a week now.
Although the review contains several errors, we are praised ;). It is 
quite a honour to be reviewed in this Freeware/Shareware section of 
them (10 programs are reviewed every 2 months). ( a honour MPlayerOSX 
has not yet received ;)

Here is the translation.

Apple has developed a flexibel video and audiosystem for the Mac with 
QuickTime. It can handle quite a few fileformats, from MPEG to MOV's. 
Yet there are always exceptions. These come primarily from the 
Windowsworld, where 'standards' are changing day by day. It is 
understandable that QuickTime (which primarily focuses on the Mac) 
sometimes keeps its distance in these things. Therefore not every movie 
or audio file can be easily played on Mac OS. Fortunately there is a 
good alternative in the form of VideoLan: a universal player for those 
formats skipped by Apple. The program originates from the Open Source 
and Linux community. VideoLan or VLC is also available in a OS X 
version for some time now. This opens doors for the Mac-owner which 
otherwise would have stayed closed. The big advantage of this program 
is primarily that it can handle the fileformats with which Quicktime 
often has problems. Movies coming from a Windowsworld like Avi, Windows 
Media (.asf .mwv) suddenly work on the Mac with this player, as do the 
recent Ogg Vorbis and the many MPEG-variants. Support for the 
unofficial DivX is also present. Besides that, VideoLan can also play 
all kinds of video-cd's and dvd's (as long as the hardware can deal 
with them).
The program does suffer from a few small problems in the 0.5 release. 
The playing of fullscreen DivX/Avi films on less powerful computers for 
instance went a lot smoother in the older 0.4.3 [i think they mean 
0.4.6, but what the hell DJ] version. (That's why we are keeping a copy 
of that as well). Also, QuickTime can play certain formats (like .mov 
and .mp3) a lot nicer.
On the other hand, the controlpanel is definitely better and responds 
faster to our commands. Therefore our ears are spared when a movie, 
once again, starts at full volume. In older versions we had to press 
the cursorkey like a madman to expose ourselves of the noise.
VideoLan is not yet a pefect player. It did however over the last year 
grew out to be one of the best. VLC takes care of those Windowsformats 
that Apple rather ignores. Therefore we would no longer be able to miss 
VideoLan, ss an addition to QuickTime.

Mac ontwikkeld. Van MPEG tot MOVie kan het hel wat verschillende 
bestandsformaten aan. Toch zijn er altijd uitzonderingen. Die komen met 
name uit de Windows-wereld, waar pseudostandaarden elkaar vaak snel 
afwisselen. Het valt te begrijpen dat QuickTime (dat zich immers 
voornamelijk op de Macintosh right) daar soms wat afstand van houdt. 
Niet ieder willekeurig film- of audiobestand laat zich dan ook 
probleemloos op de Mac afspelen. Gelukkig is er een goed alternatief in 
de vorm van VideoLan: een universele afspeler voor de formaten die 
Apple overgeslagen heeft. Het programma komt uit de Open Source en 
Linux wereld. VideoLAN of VLC is sinds enige tijd echter ook in een 
OSX-uitvoering verkrijgbaar. Dat opent voor de Mac-bezitter heel wat 
deuren die anders gesloten zouden blijven. Het grote pluspunt is dat 
dit programma vooral goed overweg kan met de bestandsformaten waar 
QuickTime vaak moeite mee heeft. Uit de Windows-wereld afkomstige films 
als Avi, Windows Media (asf, wmv) doen het met deze speler plotseling 
ook op de Mac, net als het recentere Ogg Vorbis en diverse 
MPEG-varianten. Ondersteuning  voor het officieuze DivX ontbreekt 
evenmin. Daarnaast kan VideoLan allerlei soorten video-cd's en dvd's 
afspelen (vooropgesteld uiteraard dat onze hardware daarmee overweg 
kan).
Het programma lijdt in de huidige 0.5- uitvoering nog wel aan wat 
kleinere nadelen. Zo gaat het afspelen van schermvullende DivX/Avi 
films op minder krachtige computers met de oudere versie 0.4.2 
eigenlijk soepeler. (Die bewaren we dan ook nog maar even.) Bovendien 
speelt QuickTime sommige bestanden (zoals .mov en .mp3) heel wat 
fraaier af. Daar staat tegenover dat het controlepaneel in de jongste 
revisie duidelijk beter en sneller op commando's reageert. Daardoor 
blijven onze trommelvliezen in elk geval heel wanneer een filmpje weer 
eens  op volle geluidssterkte van start gaat. In oudere versies moesten 
we nog als een bezetene op een cursortoets drukken om de herrie zo rap 
mogelijk te beteugelen.
VideoLan is nog geen perfecte afspeler. Wel groeide het progamma in het 
afgelopen jaar uit tot een van de beste. Juist de Windowsformaten die 
Apple het liefst links laat liggen, neemt VLC voor zijn rekening. Als 
aanvulling op QuickTime zouden we VideoLan dan ook niet graag meer 
missen.
