Try deleting your preferences, they are located in 
HOME/Library/Preferences/VLC/vlcrc and 
HOME/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.plist

However it might be the software is indeed not OSX 10.1 compatible 
anymore. We haven't tested that in a while.
