Okay, try updating to glibc 2.3.2.  It's included with Red Hat 9, but 
you can get the file individually from the net.

I really appreciate your help on this.  I need some aid understanding what the problem is,
hopefully to avoid similar problems down the road.

The "missing file" already is present on my system. (FYI, my RH8 system appears to have
glibc 2.2.93) Does glibc 2.3.2 contain a different version
of libpthread.so.0?  or is my libpthread.so.0 merely in the wrong directory (/lib)?  If that is the case,
how can I determine what directory vlc expects to find it in?  Can't I just copy the file there, or put in
a link?

If I can understand what the underlying problem is with this file, maybe I can solve the similar
problems with the other failed dependency files (at least some of them).
