About your multicast problem, please run vlc with the -vv argumemt and
send us the log. One possible reason, if you are making tests on a LAN
is that you haven't specified any default gateway. Thus your linux box
doesn't know on which interfqce it should send data...

About your 2nd issue, you haven't compiled any graphic interface. Please
install/compile wxWidgets 2.4 or 2.5 and configure using
--enable-wxwindows. BTW, hte default command interface you are currently
getting in the console already allows you basic control of vlc (type
help for a list of commands). The ncurses or http interface could also
help.
