[vlc] loading a playlist

Is there a way to tell a running vlc to add items to the playlist?

I'm trying to set up a streaming server with vlc that runs
through a playlist of ~2500 in random order, and there doesnt 
seem to be an easy way to do this. i'm thinking perhaps I can
have a script running that throws random files at the running
vlc to emulate this behavious.
