I would appreciate help in getting audio from DVDs

I'm using MAC OSX V10.2.8 on G4   and using LaCie d2 DVD  & downloaded
VLC 0.7.1a
I can play a CD with audio
I can get the video from a DVD   -  but no sound
I went into preferences and tried several settings  without success
