Could you try with the vlc-0.7.2-test3 (the source tarball is here : http://download.videolan.org/pub/testing/vlc-0.7.2-test3/vlc-0.7.2-test3.tar.bz2 ) ? 

Moreover, we  would need  the exact  commandline you  are using  and the
debug information you get when launching vlc with the -vvv option.
