Tom,

The RPM packages for vlc-0.8.0 that are the website are built
specifically for RH9 and Fedora Core 1/2. Between those RedHat
distributions and RedHat 8 a lot of differences on Linux kernel and libc
(glibc) library exists. In other words do not try them for your RedHat 8.0.

I think you have the following options:
1) Use a VLC version that has RPM's build for RedHat 8.0 (probably VLC
version 0.6.0)
2) Upgrade your system to RedHat 9/Fedore Core 2
3) Built VLC from the source code yourself (including all depedent
libraries).

Changing the glibc library on your RedHat 8 system is not very wise. The
whole distribution (including the kernel) is tied to you glibc library.
Now you need to restore the original glibc on your system, which is not
easy unless you forcefully overwrite the libraries with: rpm -ivh
--nodep --force glibc-xxxx.rpm
Use the original glibc for RedHat 8.0.
