That's not really true. Apple blocks the possibility to add a second 
display to enhance your desktop through an entry in OpenFirmware. You 
can easily remove the blockage on current iBooks with an AppleScript 
(forgot the link, just google for it). This should be possible on the 
new iMacs in similar way, perhaps even with the same script.
