[vlc] version 0.8 & hdtv broken (with comcast)

hi,

i have been using vlc to watch hdtv on a winxp system.
recent versions, later than 0.7, broke in this setup.
i'd like some suggestions to help fix this.

i have a motorola set top box (a 5200 that i rent from comcast
in the united states, for $5 a month) sending the output to the
computer through firewire. i use a rather convoluted driver for
xp that i found in some FAQ (sorry i can't find the link at the moment).
it makes the STB look like a panasonic DVHS deck or some such capture
device.

anyway, it would be nice if the procedure would be less convoluted,
and it would be good if things would not hang when switching hdtv
channels, but that's ok. (any tips are welcome in this regard :-)

my concern now is that i have tried the 0.8 versions of vlc
and they crash when attempting to open the capture device
for the panasonic device. the window with the request to send
information to microsoft is shown.

does anyone have a similar setup?
is anyone looking into that by any chance?
can i help fix this? how?

interestingly i am very experienced in linux, but rather
inexperienced in windows. so, i am a newbie on debugging stuff under windows.
any concrete suggestions appreciated.

thanks,

-c
