Julien,

The 'multicast problem' is not related to vlc but is due to
the wireless LAN network protocol.

Most WiFi APs use a lower data rate for multicast traffic than
for unicast traffic. The reason is that multicast and broadcast
data is meant for everyone in the network including those who
may not be able to support the highest rates. 

It seems that your video stream needs a higher data-rate than
the multicast stream allows. It works as expected under unicast
since it has enough bandwidth for the video stream.

You have a couple of different options here:
1. Check if your WLAN AP allows you to use higher rates for
multicast data. Some of them do.

2. Transcode the stream to a lower rate and then stream
it over multicast.

Using a wired connection solves all these problems but may
not be practical in your case.
