[vlc] Snapshot extraction

Hi,

I found a the following switches when running: vlc --help
--snapshot-path and --snapshot-format

I haven't found however any documentation related to them. I am
interested to extract snapshots from long movies. It is important for
me that extraction of a random frame from a movie can be done in few
seconds. I have been using ffmpeg for this, however it appears to
decode every frame before it reaches the desired one. On a 2h movie
extrating frame which is closer to the end of video stream takes 3min!

Is there any suggestion on how to do it with VLC or a link to a
program tha specializes in frames extraction. (I need a command line
interface for that )
