[vlc] Streaming from PVR-350

I'm trying to stream with VLC 0.8.1 on Linux (Suse 9) using a PVR-350,
with ivtv 0.3.5h.

If I actually capture the video to a file (cat /dev/video >file) and
then stream the file, no problem.

If I do a live stream from the /dev/video capture device, I see break
ups which correspond to debug log entries like

access_output_udp debug: mmh, packets in the past (-5938) -> drop
access_output_udp debug: dropped 1 packets
access_output_udp debug: mmh, packets in the past (-345) -> drop
access_output_udp debug: dropped 1 packets
mux_ts warning: packet with too strange dts
(dts=1117753778727669,old=1117753778728972,pcr=1117753778725858)
mux_ts warning: packet with too strange dts
(dts=1117753778750736,old=1117753778751669,pcr=1117753778765047)
access_output_udp debug: mmh, packets in the past (-14495) -> drop
access_output_udp debug: dropped 1 packets

top shows the cpu is close to idle and there is lots of ram.

Any ideas? Maybe some flag to vlc (or ivtv) ?
