Thanks for your reply - in the event, I trawled through the vlc forum 
and found the solution on the following web site

  http://www.alaskanet.org/VLC.zip  - I loaded this version and there 
was a low level of sound which eventually came to a decent audible 
level by setting selecting the "Reverse stereo" option in the audio 
menu.  So apart from the occasional break in the video and sound 
output, everything seems well.  But I look forward to the next version.
