[vlc] What version of vc should i use ?

Hi

(I use vc6.0 with service pack 5, and the compilation reported many errors 
which seems to
be my vc too old, because the header file is not the same as the current 
MSDN says, such as
the MSDN says the function SetWindowLongPtr is Declared in Winuser.h, but it 
is not the case
in my win2000 service pack 4 platform.)

 Could anybody tell me which version of vc or platform SDK should i use to 
compile the vlc, as i can't 
debug the vlc with gdb, although i could use fprintf to log some message, 
but the compilation
takes too long time.

Any help would be greatlly appreciated!!
