Yes, firewalls do that -- I have the same problem at work.

You can also obtain daily snapshots of the codebase:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/snapshots/

Need a system admin to update the disk -- it must be full, so the last
couple weeks have not been snapshot properly.

    I'm using cygwin to compile VLC source code followed by the
document--CygwinCompileEnvironmentRevB.pdf.  However, it returned connection
failed. My network has a firewall. I wonder if it blocked out the svn
connection.  Or is there any other way to do the same operation?  Thanks a
