Well, just tested, and you have a good point here... We're trying to see
were the issue is. A temporary workaround would be to enable the OSS
emulation layer included in the ALSA drivers. VLC should fall back to
OSS automatically. This trick allowed me to get 5.1 sound on my nforce2.
