[vlc] Question: Can I use VLC to do this?

Okay, I have an .avi file that I can¹t get to play in Quicktime,
Even with all DIVX and 3IVX codecs installed in the QT library.
VLC will play it fine. Can I set it up in VLC so that it plays the .avi, and
then 
Copies it to the hard disc in another format such as mpeg-1?
I¹ve heard you could do this with ogg vorbis files from videohelp.com,
But I didn¹t know if you could do it with .avi files?
