[vlc] keyboard control API

I was wondering if there was any API or documentation to get at VLC's
hotkeys or for that matter any external handles to control VLC? I have an
ATI remote wonder and it supports adding plugins that you can use to control
other apps and I want to control VLC through my remote. I also have a
Logitech keyboard with play/pause buttons that, if possible, I would like to
control VLC with also. Any help or nudge in the right direction would be
helpful.
