[vlc] installing newer version of VLC question

I have VLC version 0.8.2 already installed and needs to know the
following:

1. Do I uninstall the older version of VLC and then install the
newer VLC version 0.8.4a?

Or

2. Or can I install over the top of my existing VLC application?
