It goes beyond WMV.  I've noticed that these MPEG-4 and H.264 videos 
look much blurrier in VLC than in QuickTime:

I wonder if they're being postprocessed with a heavy-handed deblocking 
filter.  I can't think of another reason, since all decoders should give 
the same results on a given MPEG stream.  The MPEG standards are written 
from the decoder's point of view, to allow innovation in encoding 
methods while ensuring that all decoders give the same results.
