The hal version looks fine - but i will give it a try - by disabling it.

from the config file -
configure:34691: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors "hal >= 0.5.0"

configure:34709: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors "hal >= 0.5.0"
configure:34712: $? = 0
configure:34928: result: yes

version of hal on my machine
hal.i386                                 0.5.2-2.fc4.1          installed
hal-cups-utils.i386                      0.5.3-3                installed
hal-devel.i386                           0.5.2-2.fc4.1          installed
