Same error here with the svn version of April 16th on my Ubuntu
6.06machine. I didnt apply any patch and versions
0.8.6a and 0.8.6b worked fine for me.

I wonder if it lacks some dependencies since i built dependencies with
'apt-get build-dep vlc' and i think that builds dependencies for version on
my repository which should be 0.8.6 ... but configure should say so ...
