[vlc] does vlc play .iso files directly off the harddrive?

sorry, i haven't downloaded vlc, because i want to know whether or not it will allow me to play .iso files which are saved on my PC, NOT from a DVD. the website says it plays dvd, but does not specify if it plays saved .iso. if it doesn't, can you direct me to a free software which does?
