codec, or VLC Media Player?

K-Lite and 99% of other mega codec packs are Direct X upgrades.
So to use those codecs, you need some skin for Direct X video player.
Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, WinAMP, Sasami, BSPlayer, Crystal
Player and a miriad of others are examples of such skins. Personally i liked
Sasami, but it is long dead. Now i better like Light Alloy.

You would also need tools like GraphEdit and FilterManager, to solve troubles,
when wrong codecs are selected for playing (the more codecs - the more ways to
mistake them, hence those mega packages are quite error-prone).

VLC on the other hand is q different beast with its own codecs library, having
no interaction with Direct X codecs. That means it would not use those mega's.
That also means You need not those mega's.

So best way is to have both. If Your DirectX is broken, then before You would
fix it - You would be able to use VLC for playing.
If anyhow Your VLC would be broken - You would be able to play video, using any
Direct X video player skin named above.
