I'm a simple user of VideLAN and I was not impressed with this software
when I started using: I was amazed.
But we need to do more as users (note to developers: stop reading go
back to your code) to made this piece of kit more widely used and
supported.
I live in the UK, and this is a call for all UK-based users around here.
What is THE major UK site that uses audio/video steaming? the BBC of
course -- thank you good answer from the back bench.
Q: Does BBC format plays with VideoLAN?
A: YES
Q: Does BBC website even list VideoLAN as an alternative to Real Player
on their webpage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/help/?
A: NO
You (yes I mean you) need to do something about it.
(To all non-UK users: check out whether your state-funded service
mentions VideoLAN)
Below is in essence the message I sent them after a few adjustment
(thanks to their helpful replies and constructive suggestions). They're
friendly people and believe it or not, they were encouraging. Not so
long ago they were fierce advocated of open-source software (afaik- they
had developped their own format and player at some point, until they
decided to give it up and adopt Real Player), so they're quite
receptive.
I know you're all grown-ups out there so I'm sure you can put the same
ideas in your own personal peotic way. Just one last thing, you have to
knock on this door before you recite your poem:

I notice you don't list VideoLAN as a player capable of playing BBC
content. Yet it is a very valid alternative to RealPlayer. Here are the
reasons why:
1) VideoLAN supports Real Player format so I'm NOT suggesting you should
provide your content in a different format
2) VideoLAN is as free as Real Player to the end user, and better still,
it is open-source (GPL license)
3) VideoLAN works on all platforms also supported by Real Player (well,
more actually since VideLAN also supports BeOS...)
4) Giving an alternative to Real Player can only contribute to your
effort to distribute BBC content to as many license fee payers as
possible
Could you please list VideoLAN www.videolan.org as an alternative to
RealPlayer on your help page http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/help/?
