[vlc] vlc crashes on .mpg

I am trying to use VLC media player 0.8.6a, but find that it crashes 
with a segmentation error when I try to play *.mpg files. It works just 
fine on *.wmv and *.mov files. The same thing is true of the firefox 
plug-in. My OS is SuSE 10.2. I have re-installed vlc, discarded 
~/.vlc/vlcrc, and run the OS repair routines to no avail. I cannot 
include the message file because it vanishes when vlc crashes. What is 
shown below is the text displayed in the terminal window when I run vlc. 
The text in bold italic is the activity that produced the output, which 
is in plain text.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, and if you would like me to run 
more tests or send more info, I will do my best to oblige. EEE

PS I am confused by all the stuff when vlc plays and exits correctly: 
e.g., libdvdread: Can't stat ~/001.wmv, No such file or directory, 
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD, etc. EEE
