[vlc] can't create output pipeline or find filter for conversion

hi all,

I get the above message - cannot find filter for the conversion, and 
couldn't create audio output pipeline - EVERY TIME I have quit VLC 
without *first* stopping the movie OR if it crashes by itself (which 
happens on occasion), meaning I have to restart my machine in order 
to have sound next time I open VLC. BUT it is only VLC - other 
programs have sound out...?!

VLC .8.6b
Mac OS X.4.7
newest QuickTime, java, whatever.

I would appreciate assistance - since erasing pref files does not help.
