[vlc] Volume

I am using VLC on Windows XP. the keystrokes for volume up and down don't do
anything. I am using the default control + up or control + down. does anyone
else have this problem? Can anything be done about this? I use a screen
reader and must be able to lower the volume on music so I can hear the
screen reader.
