[vlc] H.264 decoding not multithreaded?

Hi!

I'm using VLC 0.9.0-test3 on Gentoo Linux with an SMP kernel.
Both x264 and ffmpeg has been compiled with threading enabled, vlc
has started 4-5 threads but only one thread is using 100% CPU and
all other threads are almost completely idle which results in
notoriously underpowered H.264 1080i HD video decoding on a
Pentium D945 at 4.5GHz.

Please advise how I could get vlc to use CPU cores more efficiently.
