[vlc] Video but no audio

I seriously do not know why I cannot hear any audio.
I have windows vista and have downloaded vista codecs.
I have downloaded the VLC media player 0.8.6d.
I have tried all of the audio output module from the preferences. I event
tried all of the video output module

So please tell me what I need to do.
