[vlc] Problems playing DVDs created by Pinnacle

Platform: Ubuntu 8.04, Intel Pentium M,
	  vlc 0.8.6.release.e+x264svn20071224+faad2.6.1-0ubuntu3

I have a DVD, with home video, created with Pinnacle Studio Plus
10.7.0.4245, on Windows XP.

The DVD plays fine on a normal DVD player, and on a PlayStation 2.

But when I try to play it with vlc, I run into some problems:

 - When playing the DVD directly, or playing an ISO ripped from the DVD,
all I can play is the menu. If I try clicking on a chapter, or
navigating to a chapter in the
    Navigation->Navigation->Title 1
menu, all that happens is that the player collapses to just the
   controls, with no picture visible

 - When having the ISO on the Gnome desktop, and selecting vlc as the
application to open the ISO with, the menu displays briefly, and it
immediately starts playing the first chapter, the Navigation menu
displays the single, disabled, entry "Empty", and clicking on the
"Next chapter" button, just restarts the menu, plays the menu briefly
and then the first chapter. Fast forwarding can take me to other
   chapters

Are these known problems with playing ISOs? Are these known problems
with playing DVDs created by Pinnacle Studio?

Are there known workarounds to make it possible to play this DVD
correctly with vlc? (by "correctly", I mean start with the menu,
possible to select a chapter in the menu or through the Navigation menu
of vlc, and play the chapter)

Thanx!
